Today in Economic History: It was on this day in 1952 the New York Stock Exchange changed its ways, ending the half-workday on Saturdays. To compensate for the lost time, an extra 30 minutes was added to the end of every Wednesday. Yeah, I know – I’m not quite sure how they came up with that math either.
Wuss’up This Week: Every day reports about our economy are released into the wild, and it’s these reports that can sway interest rates in either direction. Today we’ve got Pending Home Sales, as well as Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, speaking, tomorrow Jobless Claims, and Core Inflation on Friday. “Inflation” is a rate-killer. Interest Rate UPdate: That’s not a typo in ‘UP’date. Today we find 30yr fixed conforming loan (*$548k or less) rates at 2.99% only if you’re willing to pay half a point. Otherwise, you’re looking at 3.125% with Jumbo rates (*over $548k) about the same. 15yr fixed conforming rates are in the mid-2s – still a great product to get if you want to retire before all of your friends. And don’t forget about ARMs which are still in the 2s – a great way to save money if you don’t plan on staying in your home for more than 10 years. As usual, rates will vary based on if it’s a purchase or refinance, type of home, equity in the home, your credit score, and if you wonder how state abbreviations were created.
